Mark your calendars for March 20, 2024, as the global milling community gears up to celebrate World Flour Day under the theme “World Flour Day – Giving Day.” Spearheaded by the FlourWorld Museum in Wittenburg, which established this commemorative day in 2020, this year’s event aims to spotlight the social responsibility undertaken by millers worldwide, with a special focus on supporting underprivileged children through donation campaigns.
Recognising flour’s vital role beyond food
Flour, a cornerstone of human nutrition for millennia, holds a significant place in our diets and development. World Flour Day serves as a platform to acknowledge the importance of flour and the tireless efforts of the milling industry. It’s a day to express gratitude, admiration, and optimism. This year, the FlourWorld Museum is elevating the appreciation for this “White Gold” by championing social involvement.
Under the banner “Millers Addressing Social Needs,” mills across the globe are urged to participate actively. They’re encouraged to contribute flour to charitable organisations such as children’s aid foundations and orphanages. This Giving Day initiative not only provides tangible assistance but also sheds light on the invaluable contributions of millers to society. Every donation, regardless of size, makes a meaningful impact. Leading by example, the FlourWorld Museum pledges to donate 500 kg of flour.
Uniting hearts: Join the movement
Mills and millers worldwide are invited to join this noble cause by donating essential supplies to orphanages and youth foundations. Together, their collective efforts aim to create a brighter world for all.
Peter Steiner, Global Head of Business Unit MC Mühlenchemie, emphasises the profound significance of this year’s World Flour Day theme: “Flour transcends its role as a staple food; it symbolises life itself. Through our global philanthropic endeavor, we aim to raise awareness about the pivotal role of the milling industry in nourishing humanity. Flour sustains billions of lives daily, making every donation a gift of life.”
The FlourWorld Museum will curate and showcase the myriad initiatives surrounding World Flour Day 2024. March 20, 2024, will mark the commencement of these endeavors. The official website, www.worldflourday.com, will feature a plethora of photos, videos, and anecdotes illustrating how the global milling community supports disadvantaged children. These activities will also be shared across social media platforms under the hashtag #worldflourday.
Beyond spotlighting flour’s global significance, the website serves as a platform to explore the multifaceted aspects of flour and its future. Additionally, it underscores the urgent need to aid children worldwide.
The selection of March 20 for World Flour Day holds symbolic significance, aligning with the equinox. In the Northern Hemisphere, it heralds the onset of spring and planting season, while in the Southern Hemisphere, it marks autumn and the harvest. Established three years ago, World Flour Day has since become a cornerstone event in the calendars of millers worldwide.
Situated in Wittenburg near Hamburg, Germany, the FlourWorld Museum boasts the world’s largest collection of flour sacks, comprising over 3,900 sacks from 150 nations. Under the overarching theme of “Flour.Power.Life,” these sacks depict the traditions, history, and folklore surrounding flour. Both the museum and World Flour Day are dedicated to celebrating flour and honoring the contributions of millers worldwide, who sustain humanity’s daily bread.
