In its 15th year, the international Real Bread Week, organised by the Real Bread Campaign since 2010, is set to take place from February 17 to 25, 2024. The week encourages global participation in activities such as baking, purchasing, and supporting the Real Bread Campaign.
Real Bread, defined as a delicious, nutritious, additive-free staple with a history dating back around 14,400 years, stands in contrast to concerns surrounding ultra-processed food (UPF). The Real Bread Campaign, operated by the food and farming charity Sustain, promotes the consumption of this timeless original.
Participants are invited to engage in various activities during Real Bread Week, including baking by hand or utilising underused bread machines. The Campaign’s website provides free recipes and a Real Bread Map with information on over 600 bakeries offering additive-free bread. Additionally, individuals can look for The Real Bread Loaf Mark while shopping.
Real Bread Week 2023 witnessed global participation, with over 4000 Instagram posts from more than 40 countries. The Campaign encourages the addition of public events to the Real Bread calendar and collaborates with schools, nurseries, care homes, and community groups to broaden participation.
The Real Bread Campaign seeks to bridge the affordability gap, urging business owners to implement schemes that make Real Bread financially accessible to communities on tighter budgets. The Campaign also addresses the underutilisation of bread machines, with an estimated 1.4 million such devices in UK homes, suggesting the adoption of second-hand machines from reliable sources.
To support the Real Bread Campaign, individuals can join the initiative, make a doughnation, or purchase Real Bread books and gifts. Further information is available at www.realbreadcampaign.org.
